Hi Friends,
Came across this gentleman while I was out running errands. Happened to see the blinding light of the welding arc while driving by an industrial park area in Orange, CA. Stopped and asked if I could take his photo, and he kindly agreed.
Fortunately, I had my gear in the car, including my Nikkor 70-200 VR, which I don't usually carry with me. Set it all up on a tripod, prefocused on the welder, set the lens to manual focus (so the focus wouldn't shift accidentally) and the camera to manual exposure mode. I metered for him while he was NOT welding (figuring the intensely bright welding arc would throw off my metering), and then underexposed by a couple stops reasoning that the light of the welding arc would add illuminate his hands, jacket, and mask, while the underexposure would render the background dark.
Cranked off a bunch of shots and came away with a few that I liked.
Comments welcomed as always. Thanks for looking!
